MELTEM ÖZBEK Interview

I am a 2006 international relations graduate from Bilgi University. After completing Fashion design education at Istanbul Moda Academy in 2019, I won the first place in leather category in ‘’ 2010 Koza Young Fashion Designers Contest ‘’ organized by Itkip.

My collection, ‘2019 Stories of Flora motif, is applied to the TENCEL TM botanical fiber fabrics, which are produced from renewable wood sources, produced by environmentally friendly production processes and which are soluble in nature, by using reactive printing technique.

You studied International Relations at the University, yet you are known as a famous fashion designer, can we briefly listen to your journey from international relations to fashion?

I am a 2006 international relations graduate from Bilgi University. After completing Fashion design education at Istanbul Moda Academy in 2019, I won the first place in leather category in ‘’ 2010 Koza Young Fashion Designers Contest ‘’ organized by Itkip.

Then, I got training at Vakko Esmod. Then, with the fashion workshop project organized by Istanbul Chamber of Commerce, I was entitled to exhibit my collection in ‘’ Pure London ‘’ fair in London. In 2012, with a scholarship from ITKIP, I completed the design realization program at the London College of Fashion Center for Fashion Enterprise. I exhibited my first collection in Istanbul Fashion Week in 2014 and I continue to exhibit my collection every season. My branding process also started in this period.

Many designers have a slogan or motto that expresses themselves, or that inspires them. What’s yours?

I believe that as long as you can feel free, original designs can be created.

What kind of clothes do you design? What would you like to say about your style and your audience?

Meltem Özbek woman appeals to women who like to be simple, modern and stylish.

Where do you supply your fabric from? What are your thoughts on Turkish fabrics?

We provide our fabrics from Turkey. I like Turkish fabrics.

Organic fabrics and sustainable designs are on the rise. Could you give us information about your thoughts and your studies, if you have any?

My collection, ‘2019 Stories of Flora motif, is applied to the TENCEL TM botanical fiber fabrics, which are produced from renewable wood sources, produced by environmentally friendly production processes and which are soluble in nature, by using reactive printing technique.

TENCEL TM fabrics, which give a light touch to the skin with their slippery and soft texture, are used especially for summer months because they provide breathability and body heat balance. We are going through a period in which women take care of their skin and health and become more aware of this issue. I support the increase in the use of organic fabrics.
